Neither option is better for everyone. A trade-in voucher gives you credit that can usually only be spent with the retailer that issued it, often towards a new device. A cash sale pays you money that you can use anywhere. The right choice depends on what you planned to do next, and on the actual amounts you are offered on the day.
What is a trade-in voucher or credit?
In a trade-in programme, you hand over your old phone and receive its value as a voucher, store credit or a discount. Retailers and mobile operators run programmes like this, usually alongside the sale of new devices.
The value is real, but it is tied to one place. In most programmes you can only spend it with the business that issued it. Some programmes apply the credit only when you buy a new device, and some limit which products it covers. The terms differ from one programme to another, so read them before you agree.
What is a cash sale?
In a cash sale, a buyer purchases your phone outright and pays you money. Nothing else is attached. You do not have to buy another device, sign a plan or return to the same shop.
Once you are paid, the money is yours to use as you like. You can put it towards a new phone from any seller, spend it on something unrelated, or keep it.
How do a cash sale and a trade-in voucher compare?
| Trade-in voucher or credit | Cash sale | |
|---|---|---|
| How you are paid | Voucher, store credit or a discount on a purchase | Money |
| Where you can spend it | Usually only with the retailer or operator that issued it | Anywhere |
| Need to buy a new device? | Often yes, or the credit has no use to you | No |
| Who it suits | People already buying from that retailer, when the credit offered is higher | People who want the money, are buying elsewhere, or are not upgrading |
When does a trade-in voucher make sense?
A voucher makes sense when two things are true together.
- You were going to buy from that retailer anyway. The credit then replaces money you would have spent there in any case.
- The credit offered is higher than the cash you could get for the same phone.
If both apply, the voucher is the better deal for you. It can also be convenient, because you hand over the old phone and collect the new one in a single visit.
Be careful if only the second point applies. A higher figure is not worth more to you if it pushes you to buy something you did not plan to buy.
When does a cash sale make sense?
Cash is usually the better fit in these situations:
- You want the money itself. For bills, savings, travel or anything else that is not a phone.
- You are buying elsewhere. You have found the new device you want at a different seller, or you are buying a used one.
- You are not upgrading. You already have your next phone, or you are clearing out a spare device.
- You have not decided yet. Cash keeps your options open. A voucher makes the decision for you.
How should you compare the two offers?
Compare the actual amounts on the day. Used phone values change over time, so a figure you saw earlier, or a figure in an advert, is not a reliable guide. Describe the phone the same way to each buyer: same model, same storage, same condition.
Then ask a few plain questions about each offer:
- Is this figure final, or an estimate that can change after the phone is inspected?
- If it is a voucher, where can it be spent, and on which products?
- Does the voucher expire?
- Do I have to buy something now to receive the value?
- Can I walk away if I do not like the final figure?
With those answers, the choice is usually clear. If the voucher is higher and you were buying there anyway, take the voucher. If the amounts are close, or you want freedom over how you spend, take the cash.
How does Celltrade.ae pay, and what is the next step?
Celltrade.ae is a cash purchase. We buy your device outright, there is no voucher, and you have no obligation to buy anything from us.
To get a figure to compare, open the sell your phone page and choose your device, storage, box and condition. There are separate pages if you want to sell an iPhone or sell a Samsung. The website price is an estimate. The final offer is confirmed after the device is inspected in front of you, and you are free to accept or decline it.
If you accept, you are paid in cash on the spot. You can visit one of our stores in Dubai without an appointment, or book a free home pickup in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman.
